Understand long lens technique

It is essential to use support with heavy, high-magnification lenses. A beanbag is less sensitive to wind-induced vibration than a tripod. It also absorbs vibrations caused by the camera shutter, which can affect the image sharpness when using a big telephoto lens. In situations where a beanbag cannot be used, a heavy tripod is the next best option. This can be made more stable by placing a beanbag on top of the lens. In breezy conditions, it can be worthwhile attaching a second tripod or a monopod under the camera body – although this makes fine compositional adjustments awkward. It is best to avoid shutter speeds between 1/2 and 1/60sec, as these are the ones most prone to exhibit the effects of camera shake and vibrations. Always use your camera’s mirror lock-up function (if it has one), together with a cable release or self-timer.
